Love one another as Jesus has loved us.

Usually associated with espionage, advertising, sale pitches, even campaigning politicians. Mind control— brainwashing undermines your sense of control.

What if toxic thinking is also brainwashing?

Flooding your mind with negative thoughts.

Immersing your body in chemicals that are physically, mentally and emotionally damaging. An estimated 75% to 95% of illnesses are a direct result of toxic thinking.

Toxic thinking also stimulates the pleasure and learning centers of the brain. It is as addictive as junk food, drugs and alcohol.

How can you stop toxic thinking?

As with any addiction, one has to detox— kick the habit. In the case of toxic thinking, you must first identify what is a toxic thought. Although not an exhaustive list, these are some of the more common toxic thoughts.

I am a victim. You are not a victim! Stop blaming others or your circumstances for your problems.

I can change others. No, you cannot! You can accept them as they are or sever the relationship.

I am in total control of my life. No, you are not! Some circumstances are not under your control. Some things are what they are.

I will be (fill in the blank) if (fill in the blank). You ultimately determine the quality of your life. A life of excellence is not dependent upon others or material possessions. Believing this lie only leads to disappointment and unhappiness.

I am never wrong. Yes, you are. No one is perfect! No one possesses ALL the knowledge or wisdom needed for EVERY situation.

I know it is too late (fill in the blank). Until you and you alone wave the white flag of surrender. There will be more opportunities to change your circumstances or you.

I will play it safe. Passivity only leads to missed opportunities and regrets.

I will avoid discomfort and pain at all costs. The only path to transformation is to leave the familiar for the unfamiliar— to leave one’s comfort zone.

I am only human and cannot be expected to keep all my promises. Then do not make promises! Failing to keep a promise tells others that you do not value their time or relationship.

Finally believers, whatever is true. Whatever is honorable and worthy of respect. Whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word. Whatever is pure and wholesome. Whatever is lovely and brings peace. Whatever is admirable and of good repute.

If there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things. Center your mind on them and implant them in your heart. The things, which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Practice these things in daily life, and the God who is the source of peace and well-being will be with you.
