Chasing happiness is as elusive as catching a feather in a hurricane. It is a never-ending quest. Fleeting and at the whim of your circumstances or others. Happiness is an emotion that can never be sustained.

So what is one to do?

Seek the joy of the Lord, not happiness.

The word “joy” is derived from the Greek word for grace. God’s loving kindness, mercy and compassion for the weak.

Divine in nature, joy is not an emotion. It is a state of being birthed by gratefulness. God’s gift of salvation is yours. Your sin is forgiven, and your eternal passport stamped. You are no longer an orphan but a child of Almighty God!

Joy transcends circumstances because it is a spiritual force. Instilling hope. Giving you strength to

  • persevere during times of tribulation.
  • be obedient when facing uncertainty, persecution and ridicule.
  • discern and resist satan’s schemes.
  • sacrifice your time, talents and treasures for others.
  • praise God in times of prosperity AND poverty.
  • thank God for both answered and unanswered prayers.

Are you joyful like the apostle Paul?

Are you able to declare like him?

I know how to get along and live humbly in difficult times. I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of facing life. Whether well-fed or going hungry. Whether having an abundance or being in need.

I can do all things. Which He has called me to do through Him who strengthens and empowers me to fulfill His purpose. I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency. I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him. Who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace. Philippians 4:12-13

Would you like more joy in your life? Listen to the classic Christmas carol, Joy to the World. It is filled with nuggets of joy wisdom.

Joy to the world!

The Lord has come

Let earth receive her King!
 (Submit to Christ’s sovereign rule.)

Let every heart prepare His room
 (Repent of sin.)

And heaven and nature sing
 (Sync God’s will with yours.)

And heaven and nature sing

And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world!

The Savior reigns

Let men their songs employ
(Give thanks to God for sending Jesus to earth.)

While fields and floods

Rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy

Repeat the sounding joy

Repeat, repeat the sound joy

No more let sin and sorrow grow (Repent immediately when convicted or confronted with sin.)

Nor thorns infest the ground

He comes to make

His blessings flow
 (Receive His gift of salvation.)

Far as the curse is found (Refuse to listen to satan’s words of condemnation.)

Far as the curse is found

Far as, far as the curse is found

He rules the world with truth and grace(Obey His commandments and receive God’s favor and power.)

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness
(Build you life upon the foundation of God’s righteousness— His Truth— His ways.)

And wonders of His love
(Believe you are the apple of God’s eye.)

And wonders of His love

And wonders and wonders of His love

Joy marked the life of the early Church. Believers who turned the world upside down by joyfully embracing whom God said they were.

You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God. He called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light.

Once you had no identity as a people. Now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy. Now you have received God’s mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-10

Maybe we should be singing Joy to the World year round. Anyone want to go caroling with me?

Be a VOICE in the deafening sound of sameness!
