What one word describes your life? Could it be busy?
Despite technology and modern conveniences decreasing the amount of time required to complete tasks. Many are drowning in a sea of busyness. Gasping for air. Routine becomes a life preserver they hold onto for dear life.
Routine provides a false sense of control. This predictability in an increasingly chaotic world may feel comforting, but overtime is detrimental. “Running through things because you are familiar with them breeds routine, and this is the seed of boredom.” (James Galway) Which left unchecked can wreck havoc personally and professionally.
Many cannot imagine a life without structure— routine. Believing this is the foundation upon which order and success is built.
I once was one of those individuals, so proud of my many titles. Type A Personality Poster Child. Ambassador to Anality. Control Freak’s best friend. Unrealistic expectations of others and myself increased my isolation and unhappiness. I learned through pain and sorrow “habit and routine have an unbelievable power to waste and destroy.” (Henri de Lubac)
Today Jesus not me is in control of my life. Yes, obedience in the beginning was difficult and at times still is. Regardless, the benefits of peace and purpose far outweighed any inconvenience or temporary discomfort.
By allowing the Lord to be the author of my life I spend the majority of my day in the present, not the past or future. I no longer view interruptions as negative but divine opportunities to be led by the Spirit. Since interruptions no longer are perceived as negative, stress is a fading memory. Judgmental conclusions no longer haunt my mind.
Life has become a continuum of opportunities, not disappointments. Repentance has replaced self-justification. Busyness is no longer my middle name.
Each morning I awake knowing my life is in the loving hands of God to do as He pleases. By being obedient, I am creating a great and lasting work— a life well lived.
