Last weekend I saw The Giver. Thankfully, I didn’t read any of the reviews before seeing it because I would have opted to watch something else. Thus missing a movie that resonated with me long after it had ended.
Set in a community where conformity is honored and enforced. The Giver is the story of a young man— Jonas who courageously refuses to remain silent once the truth is revealed. Refuses to conform to a heartless moral standard. Refuses to sacrifice his humanity for acceptance. By doing so, Jonas gives others the courage to do likewise.
So today I’d like to salute Jeff Bridges—actor and producer of The Giver, director Phillip Noyce, screenwriters Michael Mitnick and Robert B. Weide and the Weinstein Company.
Talk about a voice being heard in the deafening sound of sameness. The Giver is one of those movies that resonates with moviegoers who want more than the usual Hollywood fanfare of sex, drugs, profanity and special effects. Choosing instead to allow the storyline and characters be the focal point of the movie.
Never preaching. The Giver asks its audience:
- What does it mean to be human?
- What are you willing to sacrifice to transform others and your life?
- Would you live in a world free of pain if it also meant the absence of love and passion?
Yes, I know this world can be an ugly and dark place, but it also can be one of such breathtaking beauty. When YOU choose to be the giver of truth, honor, love, justice, kindness and mercy.
Thanks for listening to my voice! Feel free to like and share it with your friends.
Have a great weekend! Go see a movie. Rita
