Here’s to all the misfits. Individuals refusing to be molded into what others have defined as average, acceptable, appropriate. By the way you weren’t created to be average. You are a son or daughter of the Creator of the universe.

Did you know there are more than 8,000 species of ants… 10 million colors… 250,000 species of flowers… 5,000 ethnic groups? Evidently, the Creator isn’t satisfied with a single specimen of anything, including His children.

Each of us was created to be unique— a one of a kind human being. As such we all should celebrate, not belittle others uniqueness— even their eccentricities. But is that what we do? No! Which is one of the reasons why our world grows darker and more divided.

So today I’d like to salute my fellow misfits. Individuals who

• choose a vocation not a career. Resolving to positively impact the world regardless of the personal cost.
• dream the impossible dream. Traveling the road less traveled because it’s the only road leading to the unique destiny that is theirs alone.
• challenge the status quo so that love, justice and honor are exalted.
• dance to a different drummer even when the music has stopped playing.

There was a time when I despised being a misfit and attempted to assimilate into the sea of anonymity. Nameless faces mindlessly accepting what culture or religion has deemed appropriate.

But no matter how hard I tried to suppress my “misfitness”. It continually emerged from the shadows of conformity.

Thankfully the day came when this ardent lover of Jesus and free spirited child of the 60s decided she would no longer be confined by the narrow mindedness of religion or culture. She would accept her “misfitness” as a gift from God. Because…

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
